IRVINE, Calif. -- A 10-month old boy died Friday after being locked for over three hours in his father's
car on the University of California, Irvine campus during a heat wave, officials said.
The boy was discovered in the car shortly before noon by other motorists using the faculty parking lot,
according to media reports.
Police were notified and broke the vehicle's windows to extract the baby, who appeared lifeless.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and at 12:07 p.m. pronounced the child dead.
The father, not yet identified by police, returned to his vehicle minutes after the child was pronounced
dead. Police said he was extremely distraught. He has not been charged with a crime.
Police said he had parked the car in the lot at 8:30 a.m. Temperatures reached into the 90s Friday.
An autopsy will be performed to determine if the child died of hyperthermia or from other causes.
Police said many faculty members on the campus took the remainder of the day off after hearing about
the tragedy.
Two female students found the baby, according to NBC4.

IRVINE – The 10-month-old son of two UCI professors died Friday after his father left him in a locked
car for three hours in a campus parking lot, police said.
Michael Warschauer was discovered by two students about 11:30 a.m. outside Berkeley Place, an
office building at the University of California, Irvine, police said.
Authorities said the baby had been in the Hyundai Elantra since about 8:30.
The infant was the son of Mark Warschauer, a Fulbright scholar, author, and vice chairman of UCI's
Department of Education, and Keiko Hirata, a part-time political-science professor. The family declined to talk at their home Friday afternoon, while neighbors broke into tears when they heard the news.
"Mikey," as he was known to neighbors, was strapped into a car seat in the back seat of the car.
The students ran to call campus police and summoned doctors from a clinic about 100 yards away. Campus
police arrived within three minutes and punched out the rear window of the car. But the infant had been dead for perhaps an hour or more, police said. Although the dark sedan was apparently partially shaded by two eucalyptus trees in the morning, it was in bright sun by late morning. In a closed car in the sun, "you're basically putting a child in a greenhouse,'' said Dr. Phyllis Agran, a pediatrician and a UCI child- safety expert.
The coroner's office said an autopsy is scheduled for today.
It was unclear why Warschauer left his son in the car. Police said the case remains under investigation.
Some similar cases in recent years have been prosecuted under child-endangerment laws.
