Authorities Question Father

POSTED: 5:55 pm PDT September 9, 2004
UPDATED: 7:49 pm PDT September 9, 2004

A 5-month-old girl left inside a van for nearly five hours Thursday died at a hospital.

Police said her father was detained. He was being questioned Thursday evening.

The child was found inside a white minivan at First Street and Grand Avenue in Santa Ana. Authorities said the child was pronounced dead at the Western Medical Center.

Police said the father followed emergency crews to the hospital and called 911 on the way. He was told to pull over and meet an officer.

Police said the death probably was caused by hot conditions inside the vehicle. The child was in the vehicle for about five hours, police said.

Temperatures in Santa Ana topped 90 degrees Thursday afternoon.
