A 14-month-old girl died after being run over by a woman who was backing her pickup out of her Auburn Drive driveway in City Heights yesterday.
Ashley Mora Reyes suffered severe head injuries and died at Children's Hospital less than an hour after the 3:50 p.m. accident, said a Medical Examiner's investigator. Ashley lived with her parents, Carlos and Bertha Mora on L Street, the investigator said. San Diego police said Ashley was at her aunt's house on Auburn Drive and started walking down the sidewalk with her 6-year-old cousin. Two doors down, a 34-year-old woman was backing out of her narrow driveway, hemmed in by a tall hedge on one side and a block wall on the other. She told investigators that she saw the two girls, so she stopped the truck. "When she saw them stop, she began backing again," said Detective Sgt. Michael Healey, a traffic investigator. Apparently Ashley started forward at the same time and a back tire of the pickup rolled over her. The 6-year-old told the driver what was happening, Healey said. The name of the driver, who was badly shaken by the accident, was not released by police. Healey said Ashley's parents arrived and were taken to the hospital to be with their daughter.
