Infant dies in vehicle fire

By Vanessa Van Hyfte

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- A nine-month-old boy died after being trapped inside a burning car. It happened around 2:00 p.m. at the Rock Island K-Mart off of John deere Road.

Witness Steve Novak says the child's mother went inside the store to shop and left her three children in the car. The four year old child managed to pull his two-year-old sister from the car but couldn't get his nine-month-old brother out in time.

K-Mart employees ran out with a shopping cart full of extinguishers, but the fire was too intense. Employees from nearby H & R Block also ran out and tried to pull the children to safety.

Investigators are still trying to find out what caused the white older model Ford Explorer to explode into flames.
