Hunt Valley, Md (AP) - A Baltimore County father is facing charges after police say he accidentally left his one-year-old child in the backseat of his car and the child later died.

It happened September 23rd on McCormick Road in Hunt Valley. The father, David Barnhill, told police he was supposed to take the boy to the baby-sitter's, but he forgot and drove to work instead.

Baltimore County police say Barnhill arrived at work at 8 am and didn't return to the car until 11 am. That's when he found the child in a lethargic state. Barnhill says he tried to cool the child down with some water and then rushed him to the hospital. He died two days later.

Barnhill told officers he was distracted by traffic and an illness in his family.

He is charged with child abuse resulting in death, child neglect and reckless endangerment.
