Police arrest father for leaving kids in car while playing video poker

The Associated Press

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C.(AP) - Police have charged a man with allegedly leaving his two infant children in a car for five hours while he played video poker.

Jeffrey Scott Mews, 42, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse on New Year's Eve, according to a Kings Mountain police report. He was given a $5,000 bond. Authorities said Mews left his 2-month-old girl and 18-month-old son in the 1986 Chevrolet Caalier with his girlfriend, who was listed in the police report as mentally handicapped. Temperatures dipped into the upper-30s that night.

Mews had no comment about the charges. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 13.
