LAS VEGAS The summer heat in southern Nevada has claimed a young life.

Authorities say a 16-month-old baby died Friday after being left in a car for several hours.

Las Vegas police are investigating whether his dad should face criminal charges.

Authorities say the child's father was at a relative's house when he left the child in the car (near Lake Mead Boulevard and Losee Road) in the city's northeast.

It's the first child death in a car in southern Nevada this year.

Officials warn that it only takes a couple of minutes for sun and intense heat to warm car interiors to lethal levels.

Similar cases in recent years prompted the state Legislature to pass a new law making it a crime to leave kids in cars for any reason. It's set to go into effect in October.
