Police are looking into the death of an infant who they say was left all day in a car.

Police said Jeffrey Winkenwerder, 32, went to work Thursday morning at the Ohio University Inn and forgot that his his 9-month-old son, Evan, was in his vehicle. The baby was not breathing when the Albany man took the child to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital late in the day.

The preliminary autopsy results indicate the baby died of dehydration, NBC 4 reported.

The Athens County prosecutor, David Warren, said the death appears to be accidental.

Warren said he has not had a chance to talk to Winkenwerder to find out what happened.

"They're still grieving, and I understand he's going through some medical problems and we haven't even tried that yet, " Warren said.

Warren said his investigation into the case continues.

"You can have some changes. It could eventually be up to a grand jury, but it's a situation you know the family suffered a lot, but this is really the kind of cases that drive prosecutors into early retirement," Warren said.

No charges have been filed in the case.
