VINITA -- Police were searching late Wednesday for a stolen car
with a 2-year-old child inside.
The car, a red four-door Pontiac Grand Am, was taken from a
neighborhood in north Vinita about 10 p.m., said Vinita police
dispatcher Bobby Snider.
The 2-year-old girl was last seen in a child-restraint seat in the
back seat of the car, he said. "The mother got out to go to the door of a residence (and) left
the car running. Someone jumped in the car and took off," Snider
said. "We think this is a stranger with no idea that there was a baby
in the car." Area authorities immediately began searching for the vehicle,
although they did not know which way it went. "The child is disabled and is desperately in need of medication,"
he said. Police dispatcher Willie Morrison said the girl, who is white, is
on medication for diabetes and is unable to walk. He said the Grand Am is low on fuel and has damage to its left
front. Officers did not have a license number. Police were in the process of issuing an Amber Alert late
Wednesday. The Amber Plan is a protocol to help law enforcement agencies
locate endangered, missing children through media broadcasts.
