A 7-year-old boy attempting to retrieve a skateboard from under a pickup was killed Saturday in southeast Houston when the truck backed over him.
He was the second child in Houston in four days to be hit by a truck backing up.
Rogelio "Roger" Castaneda, who was visiting his grandmother in the 5700 block of Newport, was pronounced dead about 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Houston police identified the driver as Yolanda Lima, 50, who lives across the street from the boy's grandmother.
Roger and other children had been playing in the street and near Lima's driveway, said Louie Garcia, a neighbor.
Children at the scene said that as Lima began backing out about 3 p.m., she did not see Roger try to get his skateboard, which was next to a rear tire.
"She's always very careful," said Gracie Bustos, another neighbor who talked to Lima after the accident. "Before she got in the truck, she told the kids, `I'm fixin' to leave so get out of the way.' She saw Louie's kids by the porch, so she thought she was OK."
Lima felt a bump and thought she had run over the skateboard, Bustos said.
A police spokesman said Saturday evening the accident remained under investigation and no charges had been filed.
The other instance in which a child was hit by a truck occurred on Wednesday in northwest Houston.
Jose Soto, 6, remained in critical condition Saturday at Ben Taub Hospital. He was struck as he rode a new bicycle in an apartment parking lot in the 3900 block of Hollister.
Houston police have charged Jose Ines Morales, 21, with intoxication assault with a motor vehicle and failure to stop and render aid in that accident.
Investigators said they feared that Morales, whose last known address was in the 8500 block of Pitner, might have fled to Mexico.
