Police say one-year-old Odell Gillan was walking
around a truck in the family's driveway when the driver backed over him.
Gillan was hit by both the back and the front wheels.
The driver had two past DWI convictions and police say he was also
drunk this time. Investigators are now also considering whether to charge
the mother as well.
"We feel very strong about that," said Hempstead Police Chief Glen
Smith. "The child was the last thing that anybody was looking for or
taking care of and that's a very tragic circumstance for a child."
Odell had two siblings. Children's Protective Services is investigating
the home to determine if they should remain with their mother.
