February 8, 2006 -- A toddler died after she was fatally struck Wednesday by a relative who was backing out of the family's driveway, South Houston Police officials said.

The child, Viviana Davila, 2, was playing with her bicycle about 3:40 p.m. when she was hit by her aunt's Dodge Neon at the home in the 800 block of Louisiana Street near Main.

"When the officers arrived, it was apparent the child was already dead," South Houston Police Chief H.R. Gilbert said.

Viviana's aunt was about to return home after visiting with other family members when the fatal accident occurred, Gilbert said.

"She didn't realize the child was in the driveway," he said. "It's just a tragedy."

Officers questioned relatives and closely examined the Dodge Neon for any possible evidence in the case but police said there were no known witnesses. Child welfare officials are investigating whether the child was left unattended, police said.

Family members at the scene declined to comment about the incident, Gilbert said.
