A Newport News grandmother faces felony child neglect charges after police say she left her 13-month old granddaughter in a car for nearly 90 minutes Thursday morning while temperatures outside were in the low-to-mid 30's.
Police arrested 33-year old Edna E. Beasley of the 600 block of 25th Street.
According to police, the baby was found in a vehicle at the Newport News City Court building Thursday morning.
Police say Beasley had business in the courthouse and had brought her grandchild along.
A police officer who was attending court was approached by a passerby about a small child left in a car outside the court building.
Authorities say the officer found the child in a locked car, still strapped into a car seat. The officer used a 'slim jim' to access the vehicle, and removed the child around 10:30am. Police believe the baby had been in the car since approximately 9:00am.
Police say the car's engine was not running, and therefore it did not have its heater running.
Thirteen-month old Kantica Scott has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services. Authorities say she is in good health.
Beasley was charged with felony child neglect. Her bond was set at $7,500.
Police tell WAVY News 10 that the child's mother is Beasley's 15-year old daughter.
Beasley told WAVY News 10 Thursday afternoon that she had no idea the child was in the backseat, and that her daughter must have place the baby in the car seat without her knowledge.
