SEATTLE - A 6-year-old girl survived a frightening wild ride alone in her mom's car down a steep hill and an even steeper embankment Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Seattle Fire Department says the girl's mom left her in the car alone for just a few moments in front of their Northgate area home. They believe the girl either bumped or moved the gearshift into neutral and the car began rolling down 102nd St. NE.

The car traveled an estimated 50 yards and at up to 25 miles an hour until it crashed through a fence and then down an embankment at Thornton Creek Park, landing upside down.

"She was right up in the front, " said witness and neighbor Mike Day. "It looked like the driver seat facing backwards standing up almost. Just looked like scared out of her mind."

Day ran back into the house and called 911.

"By the time I got back out with the phone in hand the girl was already up walking around, which I still don't understand. Closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen that's for sure."

The girl was able to get out of the smashed car even though it landed upside down and the roof of the car was crushed. Her mom and neighbors scrambled down the hillside to help her.

"They both looked pretty scared and traumatized," said neighbor and witness Jordan Hoskinson. "And then my other roommate jumped down the hill to help the little girl up and basically carry her up."

The girl was held overnight at Harborview Medical Center for observation. She was listed in stable condition.
