ELKHORN--Two Delavan police officers testified Friday that a Rib Lake woman who left her 7-month-old daughter in a hot car July 18 told them she "forgot" about the child when she went into a store.
The infant was in the car, which had all of its windows rolled up, for 20 to 30 minutes, police officer Jeffry Spotz testified.
Jennifer M. Pester, 19, is charged with one count each of second-degree reckless endangering safety and child neglect. She would face a maximum sentence of five years and nine months if convicted of both charges.
Spotz testified that Pester told him she "totally forgot about the child in the back seat."
Rescue workers had been treating the infant for 10 minutes before Pester and a man came out of The Dollar Tree store, Spotz testified.
Pester asked where her child was when she came out of the store, but she didn't offer many details on why the infant was left in the car, Spotz said.
"She was quite emotional at the time. She didn't say a lot," Spotz said.
Officer James Bilskey testified that the weather was "very hot and humid" July 18.
He said he stuck his head inside the car after the infant had been removed.
"It was very hot. It felt like a sauna," he said.
Spotz testified that the temperature was in the mid-90s that day with a heat index of 100 degrees.
The baby was taken to Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn, where she was checked and then placed into the custody of the human services department.
After testimony from both officers at the preliminary hearing, neither attorney made an argument and Pester was ordered to stand trial.
Pester is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 17, where she likely will enter a plea to the charges. She has been released from custody on a $500 cash bond with the provision that she not have contact with her daughter.
