Suspect Steals Car With Child Inside
Act Of Leaving Child Alone In Car Will Soon Be Illegal

UPDATED: 9:08 p.m. PST December 6, 2001

A routine trip for groceries Thursday turned into a frightening moment for a Bakersfield family.

Their car was stolen by an unidentified female from the parking lot of a south Bakersfield convenience store, but what the suspect didn't know is the family's 12-month-old son was still in the back seat.

The 1-year-old boy was found unharmed at a FastTrip at 34th and Q Streets. The car was recovered in the area soon afterward.

The incident happened at about 1 a.m. when Wyman Young II left his sleeping son in a running can unattended.

When he came out of the A.M.-P.M. at H and Brundage roads, his car and son were gone.

No arrest has been made, and an investigation into the crime is under way.

Although the act of leaving a child alone in a car is not a crime now, Bakersfield Police Sgt. Bill Maxwell said the department wants to remind parents it will be starting Jan. 1.
