BLAINE, Minn., 8:25 a.m. EDT July 11, 2001 -- Police found a baby's body inside a sweltering van Tuesday afternoon in Blaine, Minn.
Authorities said that the baby had been in the van, which was parked in the Village Bank building parking lot, for most of the day.
The 29-year-old father, who works at a mortgage company inside the building, apparently left his 4-month-old child in the van all day, according to police. The van's windows were closed and the baby was not breathing.
A passerby saw the baby in the van and called 911 around 3:30 p.m. Police were unable to revive the child.
They found the father inside the bank. He was interviewed, but authorities said that he has not been arrested.
"We've not been able to determine how long, but it does appear that the baby was in the car for an extended period of time," police chief Dave Johnson said.
Johnson said that the department has no reason to believe that the death was not an accident.
The Anoka County attorney will determine whether charges should be filed.
